Henry E. McLaughlin, Chairman of the Parthenon Group

Mr. McLaughlin began his real estate experience about forty years ago when his Father died suddenly after starting a 25 acre development and circumstances required him to follow through on completing the project. His formal education included a Bachelors from University of the South, Sewanee, TN, Masters of Economics program at University of Florida and finished with MBA from University of Virginia. After work as a grader for the CFA Exam, Investment Banker in Real Estate with Major Regional Wall Street firm, and Venture Capital manager, he has spent the past 30 years in Apartment investments. He has been an officer of a large property management organization and co founded Parthenon in 1985.

For the next ten years, he was involved in development of several projects and the investment, financing, and general management of numerous projects and businesses.  Then he assumed the Presidency of The Equity Group, Inc., which became owner/developer/asset manager for a number of apartment projects in the Nashville area.  He has been a principal in the acquisition, asset management, and refinancing or properties exceeding $100,000,000.  A large portion of these have involved participation in government programs.  He has had managerial responsibility for new construction exceeding $30,000,000.  He has been manager of renovations of existing apartments for over 3,000 units over the past two decades.  These renovations range from small $50,000 projects to projects approaching $1,000,000 in renovations.  He has been responsible for assuring compliance with government regulations on some very technical provisions in tax credits, tax free bonds, HUD requirements, Wall Street Credit Financing and Farmers Home.  Some of the compliance checklists developed for these programs have been used by lawyers as a broad model for general compliance. 

 

Mr. McLaughlin was active in the founding of Parthenon Properties, Inc. and has been active with the company ever since in a variety of capacities.  It is estimated that nearly 25,000 residents have been in his projects and numerous industry awards have been given those projects for improvement and beautification.  During part of this same time, Mr. McLaughlin has also served as an officer of a large regional property management company which managed over 25,000 units in six different states.  There, he consulted, advised, and assisted developers, asset managers and owners in the acquisition, operations, and apartment communities in six states which resulted in the acquisition of apartment assets exceeding $850,000,000. 

Outside the industry, Mr.McLaughlin has been named in Who’s Who in The South and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, he has served on the National Board of a major conservation charity, the Board of a State Park and also a college related Board.  He has been a guest lecturer at Vanderbilt Business School and Tennessee State University.  He also testifies regularly regarding housing issues before the State House and Senate Committees.  Mr. McLaughlin has been on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Apartment Association since the 1990’s.  Mr. McLaughlin has been with Parthenon Properties, Inc. since it’s inception in 1986.  He is chairman of The Parthenon Group which is the umbrella organization consisting of Parthenon Properties, Inc., Parthenon Construction, and Parthenon Realtors.
